Welcome to Danish Engineer's Association

The Danish Engineer's Association is a professional/technical association for Engineers and Dual Purpose Ship Officers, who are either educated or present students at Maritime Educational Institutions. The association was founded in 1873 as an organisation for Maritime Machine Officers, but has in accordance with the increasing technological development of the 20th century expanded its interest as Marine Engineers increasingly gained employment ashore. The association has approx. 8.800 members, who are primarily employed within various technical and/or administrative positions.

The engineers are found within the Maritime Sector, in production units and service companies, in consulting companies, and in the public sphere e.g. at hospitals, in supply, inspection, defence and the education sector. Approximately 78% of the members of the Danish Engineer's Association are employed, 15% are senior engineers (retired) and 7% are students. Of the active members 70% are employed ashore, while 30% are employed at sea.

The association offers personal legal advice and economical guidance regarding all aspects of individual payment and conditions of work. The Danish Engineer's Association negotiates, denounces, and enters collective agreements on behalf of its members. Many of these tasks are performed in close coordination with spokesmen, members of technical boards and similar trusted representatives of the association.

The Danish Engineer's Association closely monitors the development of the labour market and the market contours in general, and thereby helps ensure optimal employment conditions for engineers in the Danish society. This includes information and guidance on employment possibilities, career development, salary adjustment and in-service training. The association also takes part in developing the education of the engineers, which helps keep tuition and the training of students at pace with modern standards and in accordance with the needs of the labour market.

The association has been the loyal rendezvous for engineers for more then 130 years. In today’s society, technical networks are created through various engagements where engineers meet colleagues across different lines of work. This may e.g. be at AJOUR, which is the yearly conference for engineers in Denmark, at courses, seminars, or similar engagements arranged by the association – or here at the website. The site contains pages only accessible for members, where opinions may be exchanged, and relevant, technical information shared with colleagues within different subjects of interest (these pages are however only available in Danish).

The Danish Engineer's Association maintains the interests of the engineers both domestically and internationally. This is done by council in relevant boards and committees, and by close cooperation with related organisations, which influence the situation and circumstances involving marine engineers. These are primarily the Danish Shipowner's Association, Danish Maritime Authority, Danish Maritime Occupational Health Service, Danish Navigator's Union, the Confederation of Danish Industries, Danish Employer's Confederation, the Government, various counties and municipalities, PFA Pension, IAK, International Transport Workers’ Federation, International Maritime Organisation, the International Labour Organisation, Féderation Européene des Cadres de l’Energie et de la Recherche, and the Féderation Internationale Des Cadres Des Transports.

The Danish Engineer's Association is party-politically neutral and economically independent.

 Marine Engineers

The exact Danish term for a member of the Danish Engineer's Association is a Marine Engineer. The maritime aspect of the education and employment of the members have however slowly receded as 70% are nowadays employed ashore. A more suitable term in the English language is therefore merely an engineer, which holds the qualifications and skills of the equivalent Danish “Marine Engineer”.
